We are thrilled to announce that another exciting project is set to begin next week. Our “Whiuwhiu House,” (pronounced as “phew-phew”) takes its name from the Māori word meaning “to chuck,” a fitting choice considering one of our clients goes by the name Chuck.
This charming Federation-style house has seen its fair share of wear and tear during its years as a rental property. We are honoured to have the opportunity to breathe new life into this aging beauty, tailoring it to the needs of our young family clients.
Our vision for this project involves the removal of the dated rear lean-to, making way for a spacious, open concept living, dining, and kitchen area addition. To maximize the infusion of natural light into the space, we’ve designed a stunning, soaring roofline. Given that we are excavating the site, a higher roof pitch will not only grant immediate views of the landscape but also create an interplay of “prospect and refuge.” This design philosophy enables us to offer a broader perspective, allowing us to see beyond what’s directly in front of us, enhancing a sense of spaciousness and harnessing the benefits of abundant natural light.
The rear of the house will open to a covered courtyard, and when all the doors are open, it will create an illusion of even more space within the interior. Furthermore, this design ensures that the rear doors can remain open even in inclement weather, maintaining our commitment to biophilic design principles and fostering a stronger connection to the surrounding landscape for an extended period.
We’re eager to share our progress with you, so stay tuned for updates and photos via our social media channels.
